Tachypnoea is one of the first signs of patient deterioration and accurate measurement of respiratory rate is a fundamental part of assessment. This article aims to describe the assessment and management of tachypnoea.

Fluid balance is essential for normal functioning of the body. Oliguria (poor urine output) is usually associated with low circulatory blood volume (hypovolaemia), and can be a sign that a patient is acutely ill and deteriorating.
